SUMMARY:Red Dress Day
DESCRIPTION:May 5 is the National Day of awareness and remembrance for the
Missing &amp\; Murdered Indigenous Women\, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (M
MIWG2S)\, also known as &quot\;Red Dress Day\,&quot\; coined by M&eacute\
;tis artist Jaime Black as &quot\;an aesthetic response to this critical
national issue.&quot\; The ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigen
ous women\, girls\, and 2SLGBTQI+ people that we are facing is a direct r
esult of colonization. In Canada\, more than six in ten (63%) Indigenous
women have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime. The
impact of these disproportionately high rates of violence is felt in all
areas of life. The effects on health and wellness include inequitable acc
ess and treatment in health care and underrepresentation in health resear
ch.\n\nIn alignment with several calls to action of the Truth and Reconci
liation Commission and the calls to justice developed by the National Inq
uiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls\, CIHR recogniz
es the important role of research in advancing the health\, well-being\,
 and safety of First Nations\, Inuit\, and M&eacute\;tis women\, girls\, 2
SLGBTQI+ people\, and Indigenous communities overall.\n\nOn Red Dress Day
\, and every day\, we honour the lives and legacies of MMIWG2S by listeni
ng to their stories and commemorating their strength and spirits. We stan
d in solidarity with the families and communities who continue in the pur
suit of justice\, healing\, and change.\n\nTo raise awareness and pay tri
bute on this day\, wear red\, inform yourself about MMIWG2S\, and partici
pate in your local community events to commemorate this day.
